Danny Sangra at Subaquatica: The Velvet King Overthrow

Danny Sangra show

Danny Sangra is a UK artist and graphic designer, originally from Leeds from where he moved to London to study at Central St Martins. He’s also a member of the Scrawl Collective of (mostly street) artists and A Minute Silence with whom he works for the fashion industry as a print and textile designer. He has done several solo shows and exhibited in Florence, Berlin and twice in Tokyo and has also worked as an illustrator and designer for magazines such as Jockey Slut, Blag, X-Ray or Sleazenation and companies like Sony, Orange Mobile, Beams Clothing, Bread & Butter, Virgin Records or Merlin Clothing among many others. And about his style, well, in his own words: “My Painting style has evolved to using geometric shapes and precise line work combined with organic structures. I paint freely moving in and out of styles depending on my mood. I prefer to paint spaces, so the paint has room to grow and takeover”.

Banksy: Wall and Piece

Banksy (www.banksy.co.uk) represents like few others the current state of things regarding art in the streets. From early Hip Hop Style Graffiti this british artist has evolved towards the use of other techniques such as posters, installations or different actions but he’s mostly known for his use of stencils. And he’s no newbie either. His art has reached the streets of many cities around the world without exposing his identity or falling for the production of T-shirts, toys and merchandising that you would expect from an street artist of his fame (nothing wrong if he had, anyways).

His work doesn’t revolve around a particular character, logo or icon but at the same time is easily recognizable not only for his style but also for his critical content. His actions always contain a very subtle but powerful mixture of smart political criticism and irony. His actions in museums in London and NYC, hanging pieces done by himself on the museum walls where they have remained unoticed for hours, days or weeks, have made him particularly famous.

One of the few concessions Banksy has made to comercial use of his work has been the self-publishing of a series of mini books with pictures of his actions and very clever texts explaining them and his general view of things. Those books are very hard to obtain since they are out of print. However the recently published book “Banksy: Wall and Piece” compiles the content of all those books and it’s the perfect way to enjoy the work of this amazing artist.
