Banksy: Wall and Piece

Banksy (www.banksy.co.uk) represents like few others the current state of things regarding art in the streets. From early Hip Hop Style Graffiti this british artist has evolved towards the use of other techniques such as posters, installations or different actions but he’s mostly known for his use of stencils. And he’s no newbie either. His art has reached the streets of many cities around the world without exposing his identity or falling for the production of T-shirts, toys and merchandising that you would expect from an street artist of his fame (nothing wrong if he had, anyways).

His work doesn’t revolve around a particular character, logo or icon but at the same time is easily recognizable not only for his style but also for his critical content. His actions always contain a very subtle but powerful mixture of smart political criticism and irony. His actions in museums in London and NYC, hanging pieces done by himself on the museum walls where they have remained unoticed for hours, days or weeks, have made him particularly famous.

One of the few concessions Banksy has made to comercial use of his work has been the self-publishing of a series of mini books with pictures of his actions and very clever texts explaining them and his general view of things. Those books are very hard to obtain since they are out of print. However the recently published book “Banksy: Wall and Piece” compiles the content of all those books and it’s the perfect way to enjoy the work of this amazing artist.

Available at Subaquatica and our online shop here.

KR: It’s All in My Head

Recently the crew behind the now extinct but legendary Graffiti magazine 12Oz Prophet surprised us with a new amazing publication halfway between a book and a magazine: “Also Known As”. Now with the Also Known As name as their publishing label they have just released a second title: “KR: It’s All in My Head” that we have just received and that it’s fresh out of the presses and that you’ll still need a few weeks (months, years or never in some cases) to find in other specialized stores around Spain.

KR Book

The book is one of those monographic volumes around the work of a particular artist where the artist himself has played a big part in the edition of the book and selection of its contents, making it somehow a new piece of art. As a result the book takes you on a trip within the visual universe of Craig Costello, better known as KR, artist, Graffiti writer, photographer and on top of all that creator of the infamous KRINK ink for markers (and thus tagging). Versatile while extremely coherent , KR has been able to develop a discourse of his own both in his outdoors and his indoors creations that reflects clearly his roots and background, his geographic field of action (NYC) and the present state of things in street art and Graffiti.

“KR: It’s All in My Head” has been designed by his friends from legendary NYC shop and artist collective ALIFE and shows the extreme quality of AKA editions. You can find it at our online shop right here.

Sixeart show at Subaquatica

sixeart expo

Who is Sixeart?
Sixeart, as well as his origins and main references, comes from the 80’s and 90’s Barcelona Graffiti scene. However, during the last few years, his field of activity has opened and Sixeart has become progressively more professionalized expanding his creative work to paintings on canvas, illustration or sculpture as well as his recent collaborations with the fashion industry. This natural evolution, combined with a continued street activity, has made possible for the artist to particpate in many individual and collective art shows in different galleries and events. This exhibition in Subaquatica is, however, is first individual show in Madrid.

It’s now, when new techniques and forms of art in the streets, different from the classical Graffiti, has become a worldwide phenomenon, when Sixeart’s work seems to fit in with the current trends. But for those who have followed his work for some time now, it’s obvious that, despite its logical evolution, Sixeart’s work has never been too concerned with the latest hype and has always remained true to nothing but its own peculiar style while open to experimentation. His recurring characters, animals and children, have grown with the artist, defining a colorful but bittersweet universe, full of contrast. And only Sixeart knows how to get there and all we can hope for his that he keeps on bringing back those wonderful snapshots from his visits.

Sixeart for Subaquatica: “Niños malos con flequillo” (Bad Kids with a Fringe, 2006).
For the past 4 years, I’ve been working on and off in different series of kids that I usually call “Bad Kids with a Fringe”. These “kids” have been to different places: A solo show with 25 paintings at the Laboratorio 22 Gallery, a 6 by 8 m mural painting at the La Santa Gallery, and more recently at the International BAC Festival (at the CCCB Art Center) with a 2 by 3 m painting, but always in Barcelona. In each one of these shows, the series has been evolving and this latest collection for Subaquatica is probably the best “kids” series that I’ve done so far.

“Niños malos con flequillo” comes from the inspiration that I get from the characters and night companions I’ve found in Barcelona intense nights. All of them have been recorded in my subconscious: Their faces, their fringes, those evil faces that actually hide a beautiful inner soul in all of them. Thus, this way, this series came to exist, through different techniques and approaches: Grafiiti, drawings or canvases.

Also Known As Vol. 1

One of the most amazing and visually elaborate books to ever reach Subaquatica is the just released 1st volume of the Also Known As series. The people behind legendary Graffiti magazine 12 Oz Prophet intend to release two volumes of this new series of books every year. This is the first one and it certanly has lived up to the great expectation.
aka1

Also Known As is a Graffiti-Street Culture visual compendium that captures the most irreverent spirit of old times Graffiti while still paying attention at their surroundings. In this first volume simply the list of Featured artists is impressive: Futura 2000, Kaws, Todd James aka Reas as well as the list contributing designers or photographers: Cody Hudson, Evan Hecox, KR or Marco Cibola just to name a few. For the edition of the book all kind of different printing techniques such as spot colors or different types of varnishes have been used and many extras such as 2 fold-out posters, sticker sheet inserts, postcards orvinyl stickers have been added to make of this object a true pleasure for the senses.

“Concrete to Canvas” book

The recently published book “Concrete to Canvas” presents the work of a selection of artists somehow connected to the world of Skateboard. This culture has clearly gone beyond the sport and has, for many years now, created its own visual identity. Not only the design of the boards, the magazines or the specialized brands can be identified as part of that identity. The work of many street artists, illustrators, photographers or designers have a strong connection to that culture. In “Concrete to Canvas” you can find some info and a sample of the work of some of these artists such as Dalek, D*Face, Dave the Chimp, Andy Howell, Ichi the Bunny, Andy Jenkins, Michael Leon, Mark “Fos” Foster, Stephan Marx aka Gomes, Andy Mueller, Chris Yormick or Ed Templeton among others.

“Concrete to Canvas” is available through our online shop here.

Some of these designs come in different colour variations so its hard to find two identical pins and some use glow in the dark pieces.
